ICN guidelines for Life Coaching – we’re getting there!

It’s great to see that a lot of interest is gaining momentum regarding Life Coaching in Nursing even at the very highest level of Nursing Organisations.

The International Council of Nursing (ICN) recently released a document called:
Coaching in Nursing:  An Introduction

The Document gives an overview of the difference between Life Coaching and Mentoring and also a brief description of what skills are incorporated in the Life Coaching relationship.

It also provides an overview of the trends that are emerging in Coaching that can be adapted in the Nursing field.

These include:

One-to-one Coaching -this is the traditional method of coaching which is based on face to face, telephone, email or any other system that provides one-to-one coaching.

Group Coaching- this is slowly becoming more popular and could be a method used for e.g. a group of newly qualified nurses who meet together to discuss with a Coach any individual challenges they may be facing.

Peer Coaching - to enhance retention of new staff by assisting in the early phases of the career.

Health Coaching - to help patients achieve their goals independently.  This is a more focused way of providing empowering paient education that is more goal achievment driven.

Interprofessional Coaching - to facilitate the development of the team as members work on their relationships and also provide a forum for their ongoing reflection and action

Succesion PlanningLeadership succession planning programmes are becoming a key component of many organisations’ long-term human resources strategies. Individual and group coaching, mentorship and internship/job sharing are generally built into these programmes.

So when would you consider having a Life Coach?

I quote a list of situations for which the services of a Coach for nurses are suggested as helpful by ICN:

How do I determine when I might need a coach?

  • When you are not sure what your next career step should be

.

  • When self-limiting perceptions get in the way of being able to realize your dreams, goals or personal vision

.

  • If at any stage of your career you need help moving forward

.

  • If you are seeking work-life balance or need help deciding to take on new responsibilities or shed old ones

.

  • If you are considering how to reduce your workload so it is more manageable

  • If you are seeking work-life balance or need help deciding to take on new responsibilities or shed old ones

.

  • If you are considering how to reduce your workload so it is more manageable

.

  • If you are seeking work-life balance or need help deciding to take on new responsibilities or shed old ones

.

  • If you are considering how to reduce your workload so it is more manageable

If you answered “yes” to any one of these situations, consider using the services of a coach.

Clearly Life Coaching is emerging as a pathway through which Nurses are assisted both in their personal and professional lives to create and achieve the Goals they want to manifest.
